REMARKS BY AMBASSADOR AHMET AKİF OKTAY IN RECEPTION HELD ON THE OCCASION OF THE 95TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE PROCLAMATION OF THE REPUBLIC OF TURKEY Hungarian Heritage House, 29 October 2018
I extend a warm welcome to all of you. Thank you for honoring us with your presence on our National Day.
Our Republic is now 95 years old. This nearly century-long journey has not been an easy one. Since its inception, the new Turkish state has had to face many internal and external challenges. But through perseverance and unity, the Turkish people managed to overcome them. Today the secular, democratic Turkish Republic remains a pillar of stability in its region and keeps getting stronger every year. What made this possible was the vision of our founding leader, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who set our nation on a path of modernization and development. It speaks to the power of his legacy that the passage of time has not in any way diminished our people’s profound affection, gratitude and respect for him.
At this point, please bear with me as I briefly address my compatriots in Turkish.
We are very pleased to be celebrating our National Day in this recently renovated, beautiful building of the Hungarian Heritage House. I am sure that the fine examples of the rich Hungarian folk culture being presented under this roof will fascinate all visitors. But for us, they are also reminders of the common roots that shaped our respective folk traditions and explain the cultural affinity between the two countries. It was on this basis that our nations, despite the trials and tribulations of history, were able to forge a sincere friendship over time, which we deeply value.
This friendship is fittingly reflected in the excellent relations that our governments enjoy. In December, Turkey and Hungary will also celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity which led to the establishment of our diplomatic ties. Over the recent decades, our bilateral cooperation has evolved into a strategic partnership, which was reconfirmed during the official visit of President Erdoğan to Hungary three weeks ago. We are confident that in the months and years to come, this strong partnership will continue to bring great benefits for both sides, as well as for many third parties.
With these thoughts, I thank you all once again for sharing this special moment with us and wish you a pleasant evening. I now would like to turn the floor to our distinguished Guest of Honor, Deputy State Secretary for Security Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, His Excellency Dr. Istvan Balogh.
